A Blue Moon

This Month’s Full Moon is also a Blue Moon. But what does this mean?

There are usually only three full moons in each season. Full moons occur every 29 & a bit days. Sometimes a season will contain 4 full moons. The extra full moon of the season is known as a blue moon.  Blue moons occur on average once every 2.7 years & are therefore considered rare. Hence the saying ‘once in a blue moon’.

Naming the Moons

Naming the full moon each month is an olde phenomenon indicating the changing seasons, agricultural, ecological events during the year. Given geographical variants these names differ dependant on geographical region. The native American names for Augusts full moon range from Sturgeon Moon, Corn Moon, Green Corn Moon, Dog Days Moon & Lightening Moon. The Siouan tribes of Montana called this moon Black Cherries Moon & the Inuit peoples of Northern Canada named this moon Swan Flight Moon. In China the August Moon is named Harvest Moon. In India, on 23rd August we are in the month of Bhardrapad with the celebration of Bhardrapad Purnima. The Celtic Medieval British named this moon Dispute Moon, Lynx Moon & Grain Moon. Druidic names can vary, however we are in the Month of the Hazel, Coll, which covers 5th August - 1st September, after which we will enter the month of the Vine. The Hazel moon was called Coll to the Celts which meant ‘Life force inside of you’. Hazel moon is associated with the appearance of hazelnuts, wisdom, knowledge, divination, dowsing & dream journeying. In addition, Hazel moon is feminine by nature and often called the Moon of the wise or Crone Moon. The magical aspects enhanced by this moon include protection, fertility, manifestation & spirit contact. It is seen as a good month for creative’s. Hazel moon is associated with holy wells & springs which contain the Salmon of knowledge.

Astrology

Full Moon is a time of fruition, abundance & the peak of energies placed into new moon intentions. It is the manifestation station of the lunar cycle where we see the flowering of projects & ideas. We flow with what has worked for us as well as learn from what didn’t work so well. This is a time when our rawness comes to the surface, a time of releasing that which is no longer of service. This phase can sometimes leave us weakened or on the other hand relieved. We may find that we are wide awake & open to flowing abundance, open to the universal YES! This is our peak time of emotions, intuition, psychic awareness & awareness in general. We can choose to work with this phase or not. Either way it will have some affect.

Full Moon in Aquarius - August Full Moon is in the sign of the water bearer which is quite deceiving if taken at face value as this is actually a fixed Air sign. This is the sign of healing & transition. We may be able to transform dense damaging energies into hope & love. This is a good time to realise our own uniqueness & intelligence, sharing them with others where apt. It is also a good time to honour our intuition & to act accordingly. We each have gifts which we enjoy & now is a great time to share them with others who may benefit from them. In addition, Aquarius is an innovative sign of humanitarianism, philosophy & progression. Moreover, what we have been experiencing more of is rebelliousness, vision & social consciousness. The Big picture! Including all of us & also encouraging the self. There is a lot of intellect & optimism with Aquarius. However, all signs have a downside & its always good to know what to look out for. Gullibility, extremism, detachment, unpredictability & temperance. Aquarius is group oriented but does like to take the lead also.  Moon in Aquarius is ultra-modern, experimental & friendly. A sincere humanitarian, we may find our emotions led to helping others at this time.

Sun in Leo. Leo is a 'ME' sign & is usually all about the self. Known as the Zodiac’s drama queen, I’m sure there have been a lot of outbursts or attempted out doing from many who feel the need to compete or be at the top of their game, during Leo season. Sun in Leo is self-expressive, courageous, loyal & protective, bold & individualistic. A fixed Fire sign of the regal lion who is ruled by the sun, so is really in its element right now. It’s a good idea to be aware of the down sides of Leo such as arrogance, sloppiness, wastefulness, aggression, drama & pride. Witnessing these attitudes in ourselves or others means we can act or react in a mindful & discerning manner. As Ideas & epiphanies arise with this Moon, our wish to share maybe a overwhelming. However, self-expression & assertiveness may need to be reined in a little until a more logical passage has been found for ideas & personal will. We don’t wish to seem over-zealous with our passion or arrogant with our confidence. As the drama queen of the zodiac, its is a good idea to think before we act out. This sign is mostly about the ‘me’ in us all & as such can be a little too over enthusiastic in leading rather than being part of a joint venture, in which the group takes the credit. We need to be mindful of where we step if we take on exciting group ventures.

As Leo is approaching the cusp of Pisces, we may be experiencing a gentle flow of intuition & creativity which has been begging to be released into our sphere. Welcome it, embrace all of its goodness & graceful movement. This is medicine on a soul level.

Sun opposite moon - opposing forces are in play whenever we have a full moon. As the Sun in Leo sits opposite Moon in Aquarius, we may see these polarities play out in our lives. Our home & family lives are brought into the spotlight together with our close relationships. We may feel the tension in how we act out, how individualistic we can be tenses against community spirit. Our values may come into focus & we may have to address these issues to be able to move forward in a more positive manner. These issues will concentrate around how we feel, our attitude & circumstance. So, what is already prominent in our lives will come to the fore for examination such as home & work, need & want, individualism & community, independence & co-dependence. With all of the dominant Aquarian energies available to us, we will have a cornucopia of help healing & being part of something which could heal us & others around us. For this we need to sit within our heartspace & act from a place of love & compassion, giving this full moon permission to hold us in that space, so that we emanate grace & love into our decisions & beam out the same such energy.  Opposing energies can quickly get out of hand & create friction & possible conflict. With Lunar qualities peaking, we will feel more emotional & intuitive. We can put all of this to use in arising situations by attuning to or subconsciousness, becoming aware & viewing from a balanced perspective. This allows us to see the energies which are out of kilter & in need of our attention. There is much work to be done! This work begins within. As we are approaching our inner working season, it’s a good idea to have a final clear out of stagnant energies before we delve deeper into our own psyche. Full Moon is a time for logic, instinct & practicality.

Ask:

What have we learned from our experience of this year which we wish to carry forward? What needs release now before we begin to go deep?

Understanding & working with the phases allows our minds, bodies & spirits to resonate & function on an holistic level. Our absorption of moon & planetary energies allows us a greater understanding of ourselves, our relationships to others & to Mother Earth, gifting us with a much healthier lifestyle & state of mind

Planetary influences on Full Moon Aquarius.

Full Moon Square Uranus (Uranus is ruler of Aquarius) – we could see more rebelliousness emerging through anxiety mostly connected to where we have our revelations & ideas. This could be a time of life changing clarity, where we can step into our truth & face new opportunities. We could overact if we are not mindful of our emotions.

Sun aligned with Mercury (conjunction) could make for some unexpected surprises which could be pivotal to something we have been working on or involved with. Anxiety could be higher than usual whilst we are pulled to look into & concentrate on past events or trauma. Be mindful of our responses & choose not to overreact, especially with friends or loved ones. This may present a moment of clarity & truth in which we may be able to shed away the old & begin anew in an area of life which has been out of kilter.

There could be plenty of reasons for us to overreact as our emotions run high during this phase. However, if we can stay calm, we will be less likely to make rash decisions or allow emotion to cloud our judgements. This is a very good time to find a solution to stagnant situations. Take a good look at where there is anything in life that feels inert, how it has been affecting us. This is a place of action, where we can find solution & freedom.
